What it is

Pomegranate (Punica granatum) contains punicalagins — a class of ellagitannins found almost exclusively in pomegranate. These are the most potent antioxidants in the entire plant kingdom, with an ORAC value 3× higher than red wine and green tea. The arils are used whole in juice.

What it does in your body
01

Blood pressure reduction

Punicalagins, Punicic acid

A 2013 meta-analysis of 8 RCTs confirmed pomegranate juice reduces systolic BP by 4.96 mmHg and diastolic by 1.97 mmHg. Effect appears within 2 weeks of daily consumption.

02

Memory and cognitive function

Urolithins (gut metabolites of punicalagins)

A UCLA study found daily pomegranate juice supplementation improved verbal and visual memory scores by 38% over 4 weeks in middle-aged adults with mild memory complaints.

03

Anti-inflammatory

Punicalagins

Punicalagins inhibit NF-κB inflammatory pathway — the same mechanism targeted by many anti-inflammatory drugs. CRP levels drop measurably with 4+ weeks of daily consumption.

The science

Punicalagins are converted in the gut to urolithins — which are the actual bioactive compounds absorbed into circulation. Urolithin A in particular has shown remarkable effects on mitochondrial health in recent research. Only 40% of people carry the gut bacteria needed for full urolithin conversion, making pomegranate's effects highly individual.

  • Don't confuse with pomegranate 'drinks' — only 100% juice delivers punicalagins
Did you know

Pomegranate is one of the oldest cultivated fruits — depicted in ancient Egyptian tombs dating to 1500 BCE. The word 'grenade' (the weapon) comes from the French 'grenade' meaning pomegranate — the explosive's seeds reminded soldiers of the fruit's arils.
