What it is

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a rhizome in the ginger family, used for 4,000 years in Ayurvedic medicine. Its primary bioactive compound, curcumin, has over 3,000 peer-reviewed studies examining its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Who should drink it

Good for

  • Joint pain
  • Post-exercise recovery
  • Skin inflammation

Watch for

  • Gallstones, blood thinners (consult doctor)
What it does in your body
01

Systemic anti-inflammation

Curcumin

Curcumin inhibits NF-κB — the master regulator of inflammatory gene expression. It's been shown to reduce CRP, IL-6, and TNF-α, the same markers targeted by anti-inflammatory drugs.

02

Joint pain and mobility

Curcumin

Multiple RCTs show curcumin supplementation reduces joint pain in osteoarthritis patients comparably to ibuprofen 800mg three times daily, with fewer gastrointestinal side effects.

03

Brain health (BDNF)

Ar-turmerone, curcumin

Curcumin increases levels of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), which supports neuron growth and may reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disease.

The science

The critical caveat with curcumin: it has extremely poor bioavailability in isolation. Less than 1% is absorbed through the gut wall. Piperine (from black pepper) inhibits glucuronidation — the liver's detoxification process that eliminates curcumin — increasing bioavailability by 2,000%. This is why we add black pepper to every product containing turmeric.

Notes
We use fresh rhizome, not powder. Fresh turmeric has 3× higher curcumin content than commercial powder.
Best consumed

Do

  • Always consume with black pepper — piperine is non-negotiable for absorption
  • Pair with a small amount of fat (coconut water counts) — curcumin is fat-soluble

Don't

  • Don't use turmeric powder as a substitute — fresh has 3× the curcumin content
  • Don't expect instant effects — curcumin's anti-inflammatory benefits accumulate over 4–8 weeks of daily use
Did you know

India produces 78% of the world's turmeric and consumes 63% of it domestically. The average Indian gets roughly 60–100mg of curcumin daily from cooking turmeric — far less than the 500–1,000mg studied in clinical trials. Cold-pressed fresh turmeric delivers curcumin in a bioavailable matrix without the degradation from heat.
